Dark Avengers #14Creative team: Story by Brian Michael Bendis; Art by Mike Deodato Jr. Villain to Watch: Loki They say: The secrets of the Sentry are revealed but is it too late? Is this a hero reborn or a eulogy? The most pivotal moment in this controversial character's life yet is here, and how it affects the siege on Asgard will leave you breathless. I say: There's a lot of competition for this week's Five to Pull. The Dark Avengers beat out a couple of very intriguing Green Lantern offerings and a Deadpool. And it's all on the strength of the development of one character: Sentry. His part in this epic has been second only to that of Norman Osborn. You promise me the secrets of the Sentry, and I'm there for a front-row seat. Deadpool Merc with a Mouth #8
Creative team: Story by Victor Gischler; Art by Bong Dazo Villain to Watch: zombies They say: Deadpool and Headpool head to the Zombieverse! You heard right. With the luscious Dr. Betty and the hapless Bill agent of A.I.M in tow, Wade dodges starving zombies who are hungry for their pound of flesh...and hooks up with very possibly the last stronghold of human life on the planet and its fearless leader: a sexy Ph.D. who's mighty handy with a missile launcher. Watch out Dr. Betty, this book just got a new babe: Professor Veronica! I say: Dr. Betty and Professor Veronica? DMwaM is quickly becoming my second-favorite guilty-pleasure read. I'm really looking forward to this -- despite the ubiquitous zombie stuff. It's hard to believe that Deadpool holds down three titles in the Marvel Universe -- this one, Deadpool and Deadpool Team-Up -- but this one does the best job of capturing Wade at his demented best. And Bong's linework puts it way over the top. Doomwar #1
Creative team: Story by Jonathon Maberry; Art by Scot Eaton, and others Villain to Watch: Dr. Doom They say: Wakanda has been conquered, its Vibranium reserves plundered. Storm faces execution in the next 48 hours. And Dr. Doom stands triumphant. It will take the combined forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and the two Black Panthers to stand against him. A war has begun that will pit the world's most relentless super-villain against a collection of the world's most powerful super heroes -- one that will span the globe, offering twists and turns and surprise players (hello, Deadpool!) that neither side will see coming. I say: Dr. Doom has been cast in the shadow of Norman Osborn for the better part of a year now, so anything that gives Marvel's elder-statesman-of-evil the spotlight he deserves is a good thing. The solicit for this series promises a solid story and the preview has me hooked. Justice League of America #42Creative team: Story by James Robertson; Art by Mark Bagley and Rob Hunter Villain to Watch: Dr. Impossible They say: In the aftermath of the horrific events of "JLA: Cry for Justice," a member is comforted by his friends and fellow Justice Leaguers over his tragic loss. And when Dick Grayson is offered membership, will the new Batman accept? Or would he rather operate outside the realm of the World's Greatest Heroes? Meanwhile, Ray Palmer attempts to unlock a device that's been discovered by the team. Will it spell their doom - or something far worse? They'd better find out soon because Dr. Impossible has chosen now, of all times, to attack! Who exactly is this mysterious villain and who has he brought back with him? The new era for the team marches forward! I say: I feel sheepish about the whole "Cry for Justice" thing. I got so disgusted with the plodding storytelling (not to mention drab characters like Congorilla taking up major chunks of the books) that I skipped the last installment all together. So, I'm pulling this one to see if I can catch up a little. But this is going to be a make-it-or-break-it Pull. I'm going to need to see some special storytelling pretty soon is JLA is going to stay on the List for very much longer. Power Girl #9Creative team: Story by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray; Art by Amanda Conner Villain to Watch: Satanna They say: Satanna is back in town with her animal menagerie in tow to terrorize Power Girl. The villainess tries to succeed where her former lover, the Ultra-Humanite couldn't. This time, though, Satanna has a secret weapon Power Girl won't see coming. I say: Satanna has a mesmerizing introduction in this series a few issues back, getting her ape on with Ultra-Humanite. Now she's back to play a central role in another Power Girl romp. As good as DMwaM is, this book is the all-time record-holder for guilty pleasure reading. Honorable mentions: Batman #696 Amazing Spider-Man #621, Avengers vs. Agents of Atlas #2, Black Widow and Marvel Girls #4, Blackest Night Flash #3, Deadpool #19, Green Lantern #51, Green Lantern Corps #45, Guardians of the Galaxy #23, Hulk #20, Incredible Hulk #607Spider-Woman #6. ...And One To Pass... Final Crisis Aftermath Dance TPB #1
Creative team: Story by Joe Casey; Art by ChrisCross They say: Japan's Super Young Team just wants to be seen as heroes by their adoring public in this title collecting the 6-issue miniseries. Unfortunately, their part in FINAL CRISIS went unnoticed, and they've been reduced to performing at public appearances and on TV. Now, intense media scrutiny and a deadly threat complicates the motives of the team. I say: This is the series that I've loved hating since reading the very first one. I'm almost sad to see it go to trade, because after this dies off the shelves, I won't have such an easy fill for my "One To Pass" section. Dishonorable mentions: Doctor Voodoo Avenger of the Supernatural #5. Would you like to share this post? First, click on "read/post comments" (below) then scroll down to this button |
