POLL: Five to Pull / One To Pass

Wednesday, February 24, 2010 - 12:00 AM

Blackest Night #7
Creative team: Story by Geoff Johns; Art by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert

Villain to Watch: Nekron

They say: As Nekron continues to wage war on life throughout the universe, Hal Jordan discovers the grim, true mission behind the villain's return. But the truth is so cosmically abysmal that it threatens to expose a secret that could tear the very universe asunder. You can't miss this stunning, penultimate issue to the year's biggest event!

I say: Both Green Lantern titles last week were tremendous. The Blackest Night saga is reaching a very nice climax, and this title looks to be set to deliver even more of what we got last week. Nekron easily dispatched the Spectre in Green Lantern #51 and that doesn't bode well.

Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk #2
Creative team: Story by Jeff Parker; Art by Carlos Rodrigues

Villain to Watch: M.O.D.O.K.

They say: Have Bruce Banner and Red Hulk formed an alliance? Is one playing the other? And how does Hulk and Thundra's child factor into M.O.D.O.K.'s grand scheme? Answers abound in this thrilling issue from the mind of Jeff Parker!

I say: The Fall of the Red Hulks has kinda fallen into the shadows of the larger arc of Dark Reign, but it has a heck of a concept behind it: Huge super-villain team-up, a plot to eliminate the "Eight Smartest Men," and a revival of some classic Marvel baddies. Throw in Red She-Hulk and a tenuous partnership between Red Hulk and Dr. Bruce Banner and you have a pretty meaty tale.

Gotham City Sirens #9
Creative team: Story by Paul Dini; Art by Guillem March

Villain to Watch: Edward "The Riddler: Nigma

They say: The Riddler continues leading the Gotham City Sirens into a labyrinth of puzzling predicaments. Is Edward Nigma friend or foe? Whatever the case may be, the girls are going to get their revenge.

I say: My on-again / off-again relationship with the Sirens is on-again. Last month's offering was great fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Riddler's role in this latest arc is going to be. Dini's doing a fantastic job of writing three distinct female voices, and the plots have been intelligent and intriguing. Props as well to March's delicate line which matches the stories so well.

Thunderbolts #141
Creative team: Story by Jeff Parker; Art by Miguel Sepulveda

Villain to Watch: The Thunderbolts team

They say: Norman Osborn has unleashed his team of psycho killers and ordered them to the site of the biggest battle they will ever face: Asgard! Standing in their way are the Mighty Avengers. An epic clash begins here with no-holds-barred action.

I say: Thunderbolts, for me, has been the backbone of Dark Reign. I love the team, I love the dynamic, and I love the subtext of the subjugated band of misfit ne'erdowells. This ish looks like a classic smash-em-up between the 'Bolts and the Avengers, and I'll be honest with you... sometimes you just want 22 pages of people getting hit.

Wonder Woman #41
Creative team: Story by Gail Simone; Art by Aaron Lopresti and Matt Ryan

Villain to Watch: The Crows

They say: It's a knock-down, drag-out war in the sky between the mightiest females in the DC Universe as Wonder Woman fights Power Girl! Meanwhile, that disturbingly creepy circle of hellion kids known as the Crows do everything they can to destroy Diana's life and loved ones!

I say: Cat fight!

Honorable mentions:
Amazing Spider-Man #622, Batman & Robin, Blackest Night JSA #3, Dark Wolverine #83, Deadpool #20, Fantastic Four #576, JSA #36,, Ms. Marvel #50, PvP #44,, Teen Titans #80, Thor #607, Weekly World News #2, Avengers Initiative #33.

Trading Up

Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade
Creative team: Story by Jerry Holkins; Art by Mike Krahulik

They say: The Penny Arcade webcomic - a comic for and about gamers - is one of the most popular comics online, receiving roughly two million page views a day. For their first collection with Del Rey, the creators of Penny Arcade, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, in keeping with their humorous style, are presenting an eleven-and-a-half year anniversary book. This compilation includes much more material than any previous Penny Arcade book, with all of their favorite online strips, anecdotes from the creators, and commentary from well-known game industry professionals.

I say: You can't be a comics fan on the Web and not know about Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the creators of Penny Arcade. Their collaboration is like something out of Greek myth. Krahulik's art is simply some of the best cartooning you'll see anywhere. The line, the color, the ability to convey complex expressions... he's an artist's idol. And Holkins' deft, impossible-to-classify humor is enough to give any fellow humorists enough to ponder for a lifetime as they attempt to chart his creative process. Together, these two are an unbeatable combination of comics-producing power. This book celebrates eleven-and-a-half years of greatness. Which makes a mere ten years seem kinda paltry.

Honorable mentions:
The Complete Greystone Inn, Incredible Hercules Sacred Invasion.

...And One To Pass...

Blackest Night Green Arrow #30
Creative team: Story by JT Krul; Art by Will Conrad

Villain to Watch: TBA

They say: "Top Secret!"

I say: "Yeah, right."

Dishonorable mentions:
How To Speak Zombie, Spider-Man Clone Saga #6.
